Poster - Layout Research

I like the first poster due to the way that the characters are one behind the other.  I also like the way that the characters are both smiling showing a mutual enjoyment and happiness which I think would work replicate the main idea in the film really well.  This idea would essentially represent the friendship between the two characters that we are going to be likely to see if we are to watch the film.

I really like the way that the second poster has been laid out, with the two characters being shown in a relatable environment, enjoying each others company.  I think that this would be a good way to show my own characters, as it seperates them from the rest of the people around them, which I think is very effective. I also like the positioning of all of the writing.  It draws the audience into the idea of the film and gets them more in the know of what the film is about, through the title that is very large on the poster.  I also think it works well with the characters name presented at the top of the poster so that we can see it, but not so much that it takes away from everything else.

The Blind Side poster is also effective because they have managed to show the characters relationship without being shown their faces.  We work everything out from their body language which I think is very effective.  I also like the simpleness of the text on the page.  The very basic title and actor name accompanied by the strapline at the top of the page is designed to draw in the audience as people are generally more attracted to the idea of a true story as it is usually somewhat more relatable.

Magazine Cover - Layout Research

I chose to look at these magazine covers as a form of research for my own magazine cover, as I thought that they highlighted well how I want to contract my own.  As they all feature two or more characters, with my own magazine cover featuring two, I thought it necessary to look at how the likes of top magazine company EMPIRE, decided to position their characters so that they can still capture the audience's attention and also getting across a lot of information.

I like the way that in the top two magazine covers, they have chose to put two of the heroes looking over their left shoulders at the audience, facing away from the other character on the page, leading the audience to believe that they are the villain, or someone who shouldn't be as important.  The use of this technique to the audience, makes you think that they aren't as good as the others but are also still important to the film that is being shown.  This is a good way to show this, if there is a clear villain and a clear hero, however this is not the case in my own trailer.  This is why I think that it would be a good idea to follow the likes of the third magazine cover as it represents a lot better the equality between my characters.  The way that there is a form of hierarchy in the importance of the characters would be a good way of separating the main character from a second main character of less importance.  I think that if I was to present my characters in this way, then I would have then one behind the other but in a back to back fashion, so that I could place features such as the cover lines around the profiles of their faces.  I think this would be a good way of presenting the information in the magazine as you are drawn into both features at the same time.

Research for Shoots - Magazine Covers

The hair and the make-up on the character on the front of this magazine cover is very bright and bold to replicate the type of personality that the character has in the film that is being shown.  The bright and bold colours highlight to the audience that the character is clearly bubbly and lively in the film that is being shown.  It is important that the character is presented in the right way in order for it to replicate the character that we are going to see in the film.  The costume is also the characters costume in the film, which is why it is important that it is presented to the audience in a way that will make them more interested in the film.  The props on the front of this magazine cover, includes a tea cup, which is most likely used to replicate a scene from the film.  I know from watching the film Alice in Wonderland, that there is a tea party that the character (Mad Hatter) attends, which is a very important part of the movie, which is most likely the reason it has been including in the image for the cover of this magazine.  In regards to location, there is not a strong sense of location, due to the characters head taking up the majority of the page.  It is also known that locations are not always a very strong factor to feature on the front of magazine covers.

The hair and make-up in this particular magazine cover, is all very natural to replicate the characters and the genre that the film is.  The fact that the hair in particular, is very natural and almost windswept, maybe even though they are both laying down.  I think the fact that the hair and make-up is kept very natural is used to make it seem a lot more simple and basic to the audience that is looking at the magazine cover.  The costumes that the characters are wearing are also very plain and basic following a grey and white colour scheme to keep the idea very neutral.  This is designed to make the audience feel more interested in the idea behind the film.  In regards to props and locations on the front of this magazine cover, there aren't that many as the focus is generally put upon the characters that are being featured.  Like I explained in the other example, the use of locations on the front of a magazine cover is not one that is generally followed.

The hair and make-up used on the characters on the front of the magazine is designed to replicate the style of the movie, representing the idea of the fantasy genre.  The dishevelled look of both of the characters along with the facial expressions of the two, would indicate to the audience that there has been a sort of battle or fight.  This could have been between the two, or they could have maybe been working as a team.  Through the facial expression of the creature in the background, giving off a highly smug look, would suggest that he is a lot more confident that the other character.  The kind of worried look that we see on the other characters face would make us think that they are at odds and are against each other.  This is all important in making sure that the audience wants to know what has happened in the film.  It is designed, along with poster and trailer supports, to get the audience more intrigued in the film.  The costumes work in the same way, however the costume used in this particular magazine cover image, is not highly important due to the fact that other aspects of mise - en - scene cover the theme of the movie to the audience.  The costumes merely se the characters apart to the audience, highlighting that the character in the foreground is higher in status, due to the idea of him wearing smarting clothes which the character in the background is clearly not.  I think that through portraying these two characters in such a way, it is distinguishing the difference between the two characters in a very subtle way.  I personally think that the use of props and locations on the front of this magazine cover, are much more prominent that what is usually seen in cover photos.  Through the location being a dark and dimly lit cave, we can sense a type of adventure, which is backed up through the sword prop that is a foreground object in the image.  Both aspects are important to establishing the adventure and battle side of the movie that we are most likely going to expect when we watch the actual movie.

My Own Shoot for my Magazine Cover

When it comes to creating my own magazine cover, I want to be able to show the connection between the two characters in an unconventional way that the audience would not be used to seeing in a magazine cover.  In this respect, I think that I am going to keep the photograph that I am going to use very simple, so that all of the attention is put on the characters and what they are like.  I am also planning on using a similar location to that of the poster that I am going to shoot, so that I can keep ancillary products similar, but also different to the rest of what is being shown to the audience.  I think that I am going to show the more lively side of the film with the magazine cover and then keep the more in depth relationship to the poster as this way I think that I can appeal to the right types of audience with both products.

I particularly like the idea of the King Kong magazine cover where the characters are showing their close relationship and that the man is clearly looking after the woman.  I like the idea of this as the front cover of a magazine as the audience can get a very clear representation of what they are going to be likely to see between the two characters.

In regards to hair and make-up I am going to keep it very similar, like the use of this technique in the King Kong cover, I think that the simpleness of this is the best way to represent my own individual characters, as there is no fantastical ideas behind the storyline of my film, considering that it is a drama based movie.  The costumes are also going to be similar to this magazine cover as they represent the characters and their personalities, which is another idea that I think that I would like to follow.  I also think that I am going to use very stereotypical costumes of the characters so that the audience can feel like they can relate to the movie as a whole.  This goes for the props and locations as well, as I am going to use very realistic props and locations to shoot as it will give me the best outcome for the end result.  The idea of verisimilitude is going to be very strong, to re-establish the realistic idea that I am going to be showing through the rest of the factors of miss - en - scene.
